Connecting the Dots: Oral Health & Brain Wellness
While the connections between cardiovascular health and oral care have been established for almost a decade, emerging research shows that dental wellness may even be linked to overall brain health. Researchers found that the number of teeth and amount of gum disease was linked to changes in the left hippocampus of the brain. For people with severe gum disease having more teeth was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage in the same area of the brain.
Although more intense research and evidence is required to establish this, observational studies seem to be suggesting that poor dental wellness could be a risk factor for dementia and other cognitive health conditions.
What does this mean for us?
It's clear- It's not just for a healthy smile, but oral hygiene remains one of the simplest and most important ways you can take care of yourself.
Is there a lifestyle choice that one can make that can actually have brain boosting abilities, which includes one’s ability to remember things and think clearly? Yes, the mouth and mind clearly have a connection. What goes on in our mouth can affect what goes on in our brain, so simply keep brushing for better health!
